A working dishwasher making cleaning dishware, cookware, and cutlery easy. But when your dishwasher quits working correctly, it can be an inconvenience. Call Iceberg for dependable dishwasher repairs or new dishwasher installation in Lakeland, Winter Haven, or Orlando.
Dishwashers last about 6 to 10 years. There are several types of out-of-warranty repairs that can give you additional years of service.
The two most common dishwasher questions are:
- How do I know whether to repair or replace my dishwasher?
- Why aren’t my dishes getting clean?
DIY Dishwasher Maintenance
Your dishwasher may not be broken if your dishes aren’t getting clean. It could be the way you load the dishes. Maybe you should try a rinse aid. Sometimes running hot water in your sink before running the dishwasher helps.
It’s also possible that your dishes aren’t getting clean because your dishwasher is dirty. It would be best if you cleaned your dishwasher a couple of times a year.
- Baking soda
- Liquid dish detergent
- Microfiber/soft cloth
- Stainless steel cleaner
- Toothpick or tweezers
- White vinegar
Empty the dishwasher and pull out the racks. If the top rack doesn’t pull out, don’t force it. Carefully remove the grate and the filter, then clean them using warm soapy water and a sponge. To clean your dishwasher:
- Use a toothpick to remove debris from the holes of the spinning arm
- Clean the filter with a toothbrush
- Use a baking soda paste to clean the filter screen
- Clean the bottom of the door where water won’t reach (but gunky drips do)
- Use a vinegar-soaked cloth (and a toothbrush for tight areas) to clean around the door seal
- Wipe down the interior (with vinegar if there are mineral-deposit buildups)
- Wash the utensil rack
- Replace all the parts
- Run an empty cycle using two cups of vinegar, stopping about halfway and let the vinegar “sit” on the bottom for about 30 minutes before completing the cycle
- Clean/polish the exterior with a stainless steel cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
But sometimes your dishwasher isn’t properly cleaning dishes because you need a repair or a new dishwasher.
Should I Repair or Replace My Dishwasher?
If you have a defective door latch or dishwasher float, a repair is a good idea. However, sometimes replacing a dishwasher is more cost-effective than repair. You’ll get the benefits of cleaner dishes and greater energy efficiency … and eliminate the hassle of frequent repairs.
Signs you need dishwasher service include:
- Dishes aren’t clean.
- Dishes aren’t hot at the end of the cycle.
- The dishwasher door won’t close properly.
- The dishwasher is rusty inside.
- The dishwasher has standing water.
- The dishwasher is making unusual noises.
- There is water on the floor near the dishwasher.
- The dishwasher won’t start.
Common dishwasher repairs include repairs to the:
- Heating element – Dishes won’t be dry (and possibly not as clean as they should be) if your heating element fails. This part is not expensive, and if your local plumber says your dishwasher has a lot of “miles” left, it might be worth it to repair. However, if your machine is approaching the end of its life span and will likely need future repairs, it might be a good time for a new, energy-efficient dishwasher.
- Motor – If your dishwasher won’t run and makes a humming noise, it could be a failing motor. Your local dishwasher repair professional will check the fan blades and the motor. You’ll need to compare repair versus replacement costs.
- Pump – If water isn’t circulating properly or doesn’t drain at the end of the cycle, your water circulation pump may be bad. It will become noisy as it wears out. Again, you’ll need to factor in repair versus replacement costs.
